"High school's awesome!"
Love this--the important moments in a life, summed up in your poem. Sounds like a magical teacher happened--whether a teacher or not, someone inspired Lincoln and gave him wings! My favorite line--high school's awesome!
ReplyDeleteLincoln had a teacher that was a man for the first time in 6th grade. For whatever reason, that seemed to be exactly what he needed and after that he began to listen to his older brother's book recommendations (I was mom so of course I didn't know anything about good books) and fell in love with words. I am a blessed mama!
ReplyDeleteI love a happy ending! Although it is kind of you to attribute some credit to a 6th grade teacher (I do love that part), I am sure YOU also had a great deal to do with his turn around. You clearly have reason to be proud.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Christy. Lincoln and I struggled for quite a while. It broke my heart that he hated school! When it learning and school is such a big part of who I am, it felt like a rejection of me--hmmm, maybe a topic for another slice. He has become an incredible young man and I feel very lucky to have him!
DeleteAs a mother of sons, I can relate to many of the lines in your poem. What a lovely tribute to Lincoln. I hope your shared it with him!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Linda. I did share it with him. He gifted me with his 15-year-old "Oh, it's ok." and his most mischievous smile! Typical...
DeleteTracy, I tried to comment on your poem earlier today, but I had technical troubles. I just think that your Lincoln is triumphant. I know you are so proud of him. He has lots of reasons to be proud of you, too. You are a blessing to me.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jama. I have been reading your slices and marveling at your talent as a writer, but also your compassion and kindness as a person. You are also a blessing to me! :)
